Global bearing manufacturer SKF is preparing for a new chapter as its automotive business transitions into an independent company under the name SKF Vertevo, with a sole focus on serving the automotive industry.
SKF Vertevo is expected to begin trading independently on Nasdaq Stockholm on 1 December 2026.
SKF participated in the Automechanika Johannesburg exhibition where it sought to build brand awareness and engage with industry stakeholders ahead of its planned brand launch.
Discussing the value of participating in the exhibition, Zachry Viljoen, Product Line Manager at SKF, said: "For us, the bigger reason is brand awareness, making the public aware of the products we're now offering as we continue expanding our range. It is also a great opportunity to meet with our distributors and potential customers."
Founded in Sweden in 1907, SKF specialises in bearings, mechanical components designed to reduce friction and enable rotation. These components play a critical role in vehicle wheels, engine systems and industrial machinery. "It's a mechanical component that has rolling elements and lubrication inside of it, and that is to overcome friction and allow for rotation," Viljoen explained.
SKF has maintained a presence in South Africa for more than 110 years. The company established its first African subsidiary in Johannesburg in 1914, marking the beginning of its long-standing operations in the region.
The company also has a historic connection to automotive manufacturer Volvo. SKF originally introduced the Volvo name for a bearing product before creating Volvo as a vehicle manufacturing subsidiary in 1926. Volvo became a fully independent company in 1935.
The automotive division will retain the SKF brand name as part of its new identity, SKF Vertevo. The name combines the Latin word 'vertere', meaning 'to turn' or 'to transform', with 'evo', derived from evolution. Together, the name reflects the company's commitment to innovation, progress and the future of mobility.
While further details regarding the launch have not yet been disclosed, SKF said its continued participation in Automechanika Johannesburg remains an important platform for strengthening relationships and expanding its reach within the automotive industry.
