Hella SA showcases advanced thermal management systems at Automechanika Johannesburg
Known globally for its automotive lighting expertise, Hella South Africa used Automechanika Johannesburg 2026 to showcase another important area of innovation: advanced thermal management systems designed for modern vehicle applications.
The company, exhibiting at the event for the fourth time, used the October exhibition to introduce visitors to its expanded thermal management portfolio following the relaunch of the product range in mid-2025. The move marked a significant step forward after the conclusion of Hella's previous thermal systems partnership with Behr in 2019.
As vehicle technology continues to evolve, effective thermal management is becoming increasingly important, particularly in hybrid and electric vehicles where multiple heating and cooling systems must work together to ensure efficient operation.
Meeting the demands of modern vehicles
Hella's thermal management solutions are designed to provide precise temperature control throughout the vehicle. These systems regulate and manage heat across critical vehicle components, helping optimise performance, improve efficiency and support long-term reliability.
In electrified vehicles, thermal management plays a particularly important role in protecting battery systems and powertrain components from excessive temperatures. At the same time, the technology helps maintain comfortable cabin conditions for occupants while supporting energy efficiency.
According to Hella, effective thermal control can contribute to reduced emissions, improved battery range, longer component lifespan and enhanced overall vehicle performance.
As vehicle manufacturers continue investing in electrification and advanced mobility technologies, thermal management systems are becoming an increasingly important element of vehicle design.
More than a lighting specialist
Founded in Germany more than 125 years ago, Hella has built a global reputation for vehicle lighting technology. The company name itself is derived from the German word 'hell', meaning bright.
Barry du Plessis, Managing Director of Hella South Africa, describes the brand as the “light of your life”, reflecting its long-standing association with automotive lighting innovation.
Today, however, Hella operates across a much broader range of automotive technologies. In addition to headlights and tail lamps, the company develops and supplies products such as sensors, alternators, electronic systems and aftermarket components for vehicle manufacturers and independent repair markets worldwide.
Employing more than 34 000 people globally, the organisation has grown into one of the automotive industry's leading technology suppliers.
Investing in local skills development
With its South African headquarters located in Gqeberha, Hella continues to invest in local skills development and career growth opportunities.
The company offers internship programmes in disciplines such as finance, sales and human resources, providing valuable workplace experience for young professionals entering the job market.
Hella also supports technical education through online training initiatives, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) programmes available through its digital learning platforms.
These training opportunities help technicians and industry professionals develop the expertise required to service increasingly sophisticated vehicle technologies.
Expanding local availability
According to Du Plessis, the exposure generated through Automechanika Johannesburg is expected to support further business growth in South Africa.
Looking ahead, 2027 has been identified as an important milestone year for the company as it continues to expand its local product offering.
As part of a phased rollout strategy, Hella South Africa plans to significantly increase its local inventory, with a target of exceeding 6 000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) by 2027.
The expanded range is expected to improve access to cooling, climate-control and thermal management components for workshops, distributors and vehicle owners throughout South Africa.
By strengthening local product availability while continuing to invest in skills development and technical training, Hella aims to support the evolving needs of both the automotive aftermarket and the broader mobility sector.
