New Era for Prospecton Plant

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has ushered in a new chapter in its manufacturing legacy with the ceremonial line of the ninthgeneration Hilux at its Prospecton facility in Durban. The event, themed “Strengthening Roots, Accelerating the Future”, was attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa, senior government officials, and Toyota executives, underscoring the strategic importance of this investment.

Largest Single Product Investment

Backed by R10.4 billion, the Hilux programme represents the largest single product investment in Toyota’s South African history. TSAM President and CEO Andrew Kirby emphasised: “The ninth generation Hilux is not simply the next Hilux. It is the next chapter in South African manufacturing.” He added that every new generation elevates technology, strengthens supplier bases, and deepens localisation.

Expanding Local Impact

Hilux production began 56 years ago, with more than 2.9 million units built to date. The Prospecton plant exports vehicles to 74 markets across Africa and Europe. The programme supports 101 Tier One suppliers, R15 billion in annual supplier spending, and sustains nearly 27 000 jobs across the supply chain. Kirby noted: “When Toyota invests, the impact extends far beyond the vehicles we build. It boosts local suppliers, creates employment, develops skills and contributes to the growth of an entire industrial ecosystem.”

Infrastructure and Supplier Development

The investment includes three major infrastructure projects: a 29 300 square metre Toyota Logistics Centre, a Chassis Frame Coating Facility, and a Chassis Frame Welding Facility, scheduled for completion in June 2027. Of the total, R3.2 billion is allocated to supplier development, while R7.2 billion supports production preparation with advanced technologies. Supplier partners have also invested R2 billion in facilities and tooling.

Confidence in South Africa

Shinichiro Otsuka, Chief Operating Officer of Toyota Tsusho Africa Division, reinforced Toyota’s global confidence: “The ninth generation Hilux programme reflects Toyota Motor Corporation's confidence in South Africa and our belief in the capability of its people.” President Ramaphosa echoed this sentiment, stating: “The true measure of this investment is not found in machinery or buildings. Its true value lies in the opportunities it creates.”

Legacy and Future

Toyota’s Prospecton facility, its oldest outside Japan, produces the Hilux, Corolla Cross, Fortuner, and Hiace. With over 8 500 employees and thousands more supported through suppliers and dealers, Toyota remains South Africa’s leading automotive brand for 46 consecutive years. Kirby concluded: “Our responsibility is to ensure that the generation after us inherits one that is even stronger.”
