Reliability remains one of the most important considerations for fleet operators and commercial vehicle workshops, and SMSA Africa Logistics Group's experience with Hino's diesel-electric hybrid trucks is providing encouraging evidence that alternative drivetrain technologies can deliver dependable performance in demanding logistics environments.
The company has expanded its fleet with five additional Hino 300 Hybrid trucks equipped with van bodies after successfully completing a two-year evaluation programme involving three hybrid vehicles operating within its delivery network.
According to SMSA Africa Logistics Group Managing Director Louis Ungerer, the hybrid trucks have performed exceptionally well throughout the testing period.
“We have yet to experience a breakdown on these vehicles and they seem to be as reliable as the Hino 300 models fitted with a conventional diesel engine,” said Ungerer.
Fuel Savings Deliver Operational Benefits
In addition to reliability, the hybrid trucks have generated significant fuel savings. SMSA reports that the vehicles achieved fuel consumption improvements of approximately 19% during urban delivery operations, where the stop-start nature of city driving allows the hybrid system to operate most effectively.
When deployed on a combination of urban and regional routes, the company recorded average fuel savings of around 14%, helping to reduce operating costs while maintaining productivity.
These results have strengthened confidence in hybrid technology as a practical solution for commercial transport operators facing rising fuel costs.
Lower Emissions Support Sustainability Goals
The environmental benefits of the Hino 300 Hybrid have also contributed to the company's decision to grow its hybrid fleet. The vehicle complies with Euro 6 emissions standards, enabling operators to reduce emissions without sacrificing operational performance.
As businesses place greater emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility, lower-emission commercial vehicles are becoming increasingly attractive within the logistics sector.
Supporting a Large Logistics Operation
SMSA Africa Logistics Group, a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabia-based SMSA Group, manages the distribution of Toyota, Lexus and Hino parts and accessories from the Toyota Africa Parts Centre in Ekurhuleni.
The company's logistics operation serves dealerships across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, North West, the Northern Cape and Botswana. SMSA currently operates approximately 470 trucks and employs around 870 people.
KINTO South Africa Fleet Programme
The latest hybrid truck acquisition forms part of a pilot programme managed through KINTO South Africa, Toyota Motor Corporation's global mobility and fleet management brand.
KINTO's leasing solutions include maintenance, servicing, warranty cover, vehicle tracking and insurance for agreements of up to 60 months or 200,000 kilometres. Since launching locally in 2022, KINTO South Africa has grown to manage a fleet of more than 7,500 Toyota, Lexus and Hino vehicles serving over 300 business customers.
Only Diesel-Electric Hybrid in the Segment
Hino South Africa has highlighted that it currently offers the only diesel-electric hybrid vehicle available in the local medium truck market.
The Hino 300 Hybrid combines a 4.0-litre turbo-diesel engine with an electric motor mounted between the clutch and gearbox. Together, the powertrain delivers 111kW and 470Nm of torque, with peak torque available from 1,200r/min.
Power is transferred through a six-speed automated manual transmission, which also offers manual override capability when required.
For fleet operators evaluating new technologies, SMSA's experience suggests that hybrid trucks can provide measurable fuel savings and environmental benefits while maintaining the reliability required in modern logistics operations.
