Sherwin-Williams and UJ students at Automechanika Johannesburg
Sherwin-Williams has a long history of innovation within the automotive refinishing industry. Its journey began in 1894 when the company introduced one of the first coatings specifically developed for transportation applications. The product, known as Q.D. Coach Colour, was a paste-based coating designed to dry quickly, with Q.D. standing for 'quick drying'.
The company's commitment to innovation continued through the decades with the development of primers, fillers, colour systems, gear paints and varnishes. By the mid-1950s, Sherwin-Williams had successfully combined the speed of lacquer technology with the durability of enamel finishes, creating the industry's first acrylic enamel coating system.
Its footprint continued to expand throughout the automotive refinishing sector and by 1970 the company operated 50 Automotive Finishes service centres across the United States. Today, that network has grown to more than 150 company-owned stores, supporting refinish professionals with products, expertise and training.
The same commitment to progress and development remains evident today. Demonstrating its investment in future talent, Sherwin-Williams has sponsored the BodyShop News Africa Media Room at Automechanika Johannesburg, held at the Gallagher Convention Centre.
On 29 October, the media room welcomed journalism students from the University of Johannesburg, providing them with an opportunity to gain practical experience covering one of Africa’s leading automotive aftermarket exhibitions.
