Alexandra’s growing automotive sector is set to receive a major boost as the City of Johannesburg prepares to bring the Alexandra Automotive Hub into operation.
The facility forms part of the City’s drive to strengthen township economies by creating practical spaces where small businesses can grow, residents can gain skills and local enterprises can connect with wider industry opportunities.
The project, led by the Department of Economic Development, has been supported by the Joburg Development Agency and the Joburg Property Company. Together, these partners have helped move the Hub from concept and construction towards a more active phase focused on operations, partnerships and long-term sustainability.
A key development has been the appointment of the Automotive Industry Development Centre as the anchor tenant. Its involvement is expected to give the Hub strong technical and industry grounding, while supporting training, business development and improved access to the automotive value chain.
Preparations are now under way to ensure the facility is ready for handover. This includes finalising management arrangements, engaging local stakeholders and ensuring that the Hub is positioned to benefit Alexandra’s entrepreneurs, mechanics, artisans and young people seeking industry-relevant skills.
Community participation has been an important part of the process, with the City aiming to ensure that the Hub becomes more than just a physical facility. The intention is to create a working platform for enterprise growth, skills transfer and local job creation.
The official handover for operations is planned for 22 July 2026. This milestone will mark the start of the Hub’s next chapter and acknowledge the contribution of the partners involved in bringing the project to this point.
A broader public launch is expected during Transport Month in October 2026, when the City will showcase the Hub as a flagship example of township economic development.
Once fully operational, the Alexandra Automotive Hub is expected to support emerging businesses, attract investment and help residents take part more meaningfully in one of Johannesburg’s important economic sectors.
