The Naamsa New Energy Vehicle Road Trip 2025 made a key stop at Zero Carbon Charge’s flagship charging station, highlighting the future of clean transport in South Africa.

Joubert Roux, founder and executive chairman of CHARGE, expressed pride: “We welcome the acknowledgement from naamsa to officially recognise CHARGE, South Africa’s first and only fully off-grid, solar-powered EV-charging station, as a charging destination during this awareness road trip.”

Almost a year after its launch, the station demonstrated its power by charging six vehicles simultaneously. Brands such as Volvo, BMW, Leap Motor, Chery, BYD, GWM and Lexus were all represented, underlining the growing diversity in the New Energy Vehicle market.

Participants were treated to free charging, which also gave CHARGE the chance to demonstrate its technology. With three 480kW chargers and six DC dispensers, the site worked without interruption, proving the reliability of off-grid micro-grid systems.

Accenture, a Premium Associate Member of naamsa and co-organiser of the road trip, praised the achievement. Greg Cress, Principal Director of Automotive and eMobility, said: “This is really the future of EV driving in South Africa using renewable energy to charge, and Zero Carbon Charge is the first to be able to do this, with 120 more stations planned.”

Roux said the achievement was an important milestone: “This proves that the future of EV charging lies in micro-grids, the only truly future-proof way to deliver reliable clean energy for mobility.”

CHARGE is preparing to expand its footprint, with work on N3 and N1 stations set to start once financing from the Development Bank of Southern Africa is finalised.
