Mahindra South Africa has unveiled a state-of-the-art Vehicle Assembly Facility in KZN marking a significant milestone in the brand’s local journey.

“Our original facility was instrumental in establishing Mahindra’s local footprint,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa. “As demand for our locally assembled Pik Up range continued to grow, we needed a facility capable of delivering higher volumes and enhanced flexibility while maintaining world-class quality.”

The facility can assemble over 1 000 Pik Up single- and double-cab models monthly, with the potential for further expansion. It is designed to accommodate new models planned for the local market and increase the level of locally sourced components.

This move directly benefits South Africa’s parts and repair industry. Greater localisation means a stronger supply chain for components, ensuring improved parts availability for servicing and repair work, reducing downtime for fleet and private owners alike.

In line with this approach, Mahindra’s global engineering teams have partnered with local suppliers to explore new localisation opportunities, creating additional value for South Africa’s automotive ecosystem. This will further boost the availability of parts, making maintenance and repairs more cost-effective and efficient.

Earlier this year, Mahindra joined forces with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to initiate a feasibility study into establishing a full-scale manufacturing plant in South Africa. Insights from the Durban facility will play a critical role in shaping that project, which could have significant implications for the automotive repair and aftersales sectors by increasing access to locally produced components.

“This investment underscores our confidence in South Africa as both a manufacturing hub and a key growth market,” Gupta explains. “It is a demonstration of our commitment to creating jobs, supporting local industry and delivering vehicles that meet the demands of South African customers.”

Sachin Arolkar, Head of International Operations at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, adds: “South Africa is a cornerstone of Mahindra’s international growth strategy. This facility strengthens our ability to serve local customers and positions the country as a regional manufacturing centre.”

Since the assembly of its first local bakkie in 2018, Mahindra has grown to become one of the top 10 best-selling vehicle brands in South Africa. According to naamsa statistics, Mahindra is among the three fastest-growing brands since its local assembly operations began.

The Mahindra Pik Up, in particular, is recognised for offering the lowest total cost of ownership in its segment – a key factor for both fleet operators and individual owners concerned about long-term maintenance costs.
