Counterfeit lubricants continue to pose a significant challenge for motorists, workshops and manufacturers worldwide. To address the issue, LIQUI MOLY has launched a new digital authentication system that enables customers to verify the authenticity of its motor oils with a simple smartphone scan.
The system uses a unique QR code applied to the lid of every LIQUI MOLY oil canister. By scanning the code, customers can instantly determine whether a product is genuine, reducing reliance on packaging appearance or retailer assurances.
The initiative builds on the company's existing traceability programme introduced in 2023. Those original QR codes allowed products to be tracked using unique batch numbers to identify their origin. Since mid-May, LIQUI MOLY has replaced the previous system with a new optimised version featuring a distinctive green frame. According to the company, the updated QR codes cannot be copied and are now fitted to all oil canisters.
The verification process has been designed with ease of use in mind. A scan immediately confirms product authenticity while also providing users with additional information about the oil and its intended application. If the system detects any irregularities, users are prompted to complete a second scan through LIQUI MOLY's authentication app. In cases where a product is identified as counterfeit, customers can submit a report directly through a dedicated contact form, enabling the company to investigate and take action.
The technology is intended to benefit both private vehicle owners and trade customers, including workshops and distributors that routinely handle large volumes of lubricants. Counterfeit oils can be difficult to detect visually, particularly when packaging and labels closely resemble genuine products. The risks associated with fake lubricants include financial loss, reduced customer confidence, premature engine wear, mechanical failures and potential health and safety concerns.
Marco Esser, Marketing Director at LIQUI MOLY, said counterfeit products represent an ongoing global challenge for lubricant manufacturers. He noted that the company actively pursues legal action against counterfeiters where possible and explained that LIQUI MOLY's reputation for quality has made it a frequent target. The new authentication system, he said, is designed to further reduce the circulation of counterfeit products while giving customers greater confidence in the products they purchase.
Founded in 1957, LIQUI MOLY develops and manufactures its motor oils and additives in Germany. The company offers a portfolio of approximately 4,000 automotive chemical products, ranging from motor oils and additives to greases, sprays, vehicle care products, adhesives and sealants. Its products are sold in around 150 countries worldwide.
As counterfeit operations become increasingly sophisticated, LIQUI MOLY's latest QR code technology highlights how lubricant manufacturers are embracing digital tools to protect consumers, preserve engine performance and safeguard brand reputation.
