
DEUTZ Dieselpower has partnered with digital solutions specialist Britehouse to develop a connected intelligence platform that gives mining operators a single, real-time view of diesel engine performance and exhaust aftertreatment data.
The plug-and-play solution combines DEUTZ engine diagnostics with HJS filtration information within a unified interface, enabling mines to improve equipment uptime, enhance reliability and identify faults more effectively.
The platform addresses a common challenge across mining operations, where engine and filtration data is often captured manually, stored locally or managed through separate systems. This fragmented approach can limit maintenance visibility and delay responses until faults begin affecting production.
According to Brenton Alexander, Branch Network Director at DEUTZ Dieselpower, the objective was to create a system capable of automatically transmitting diagnostic information whenever an Engine Control Unit registers an error code. This allows technicians to respond more quickly, reduce the need for manual diagnostics and implement more predictive maintenance strategies.
By automating the flow of diagnostic data, the platform enables mining operations to identify potential failures before they escalate into major breakdowns, helping improve maintenance scheduling and reduce unplanned downtime.
DEUTZ Dieselpower evaluated several technology providers before selecting Britehouse. The company's experience within underground mining environments helped shape a solution designed to withstand harsh operating conditions. Marco Capazario, Business Unit Head at Britehouse, says the collaboration combines DEUTZ’s engineering expertise with Britehouse’s digital capabilities to deliver real-time visibility across three integrated data layers.
The first layer consists of the DEUTZ Engine ECU, which captures operating metrics, diagnostic error codes and threshold events directly from the engine. The second layer is the HJS Particulate Filtration System, responsible for monitoring aftertreatment performance and filtration condition. HJS Sintered Metal Filter modules remove more than 99% of soot and fine particulate matter, while their cleanable stainless-steel construction is designed for demanding underground mining applications.
The third layer is ATAJO OnEdge, Britehouse’s modular Internet of Things and edge computing platform. The system supports secure edge-based data collection, real-time analytics, automated alerts and onsite visual dashboards.
Designed for connected and Wi-Fi-enabled environments, the platform has already been tested on DEUTZ dynamometers and is ready for deployment. As a hosted solution, it can be installed within a single shift, enabling mining operators to begin realising operational benefits with minimal disruption.
Once deployed, the platform provides live access to diagnostic trends and abnormal operating conditions. Automated error-code transmission assists maintenance teams in prioritising repairs, allocating technical resources more effectively and reducing the time spent on manual inspections.
The solution also supports faster alert-to-action workflows, helping reduce repair turnaround times and maintain operational continuity. Automated reporting creates timestamped audit trails and historical trend reports, reducing administrative workloads while improving accountability in emissions-system management.
DEUTZ Dieselpower and Britehouse will showcase the platform at Electra Mining Africa 2026, scheduled to take place from 7 to 11 September 2026 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre. Visitors will be able to view the solution at Hall 5, Stand G9, and engage with the companies regarding potential pilot deployments.
