The study, surveying nearly 18,000 prospective new vehicle buyers, reveals that hands-off semi-autonomous driving for motorway use has emerged as the most coveted feature amongst consumers planning to purchase within three years. An impressive 43% expressed desire for this technology—similar to General Motors' Super Cruise and Ford's BlueCruise systems—representing a remarkable 20 percentage point increase over 2024.
Sharing the top position, rear automatic emergency braking has captured equal attention from 43% of consumers. This driver assistance feature alerts drivers when approaching obstacles whilst reversing and automatically applies brakes to prevent collisions. The widespread adoption across mainstream and luxury vehicles has given consumers direct experience of its safety benefits.
Eight autonomous driving and driver assistance features appear amongst the 15 most desired characteristics for 2025, including adaptive cruise control with lane centring, lane change assistance, and fully autonomous driving systems operating without steering wheels.
Younger Demographics Drive Change
A significant demographic shift fuels this technological enthusiasm. The median survey respondent age dropped from 44 in 2024 to 39 in 2025, reflecting Generation Y and Z consumers' growing market influence.
