Car ownership has long been about more than just the excitement of the showroom. For years, buyers were persuaded by polished brochures and sales talk, often overlooking the hidden realities of long-term upkeep.
Today, with transparency at the forefront, the cost of repair and maintenance is becoming central to decision-making.
MAPO’s Vehicle Running Cost app is addressing this need in South Africa by putting aftersales costs under the spotlight. Instead of only listing specifications, it answers practical questions: “How much will this car cost to service over five years?” and “Will maintenance costs eat into my budget faster than fuel consumption?”

The app enables buyers to prepare for the financial side of ownership, avoiding surprises when repairs or servicing arrive. This is especially valuable in a market where rising fuel costs, fluctuating interest rates and the growth of hybrid and electric models are reshaping affordability.
Traditionally, dealers held the upper hand when it came to information on service intervals and parts pricing. With MAPO’s tool, consumers walk into showrooms armed with cost comparisons and service breakdowns. As the spokesperson explained, the app can be downloaded from app stores and is free for two weeks, after which a subscription of R270 a month or a yearly option is available.
By focusing on repair costs and total cost of ownership, this technology ensures the thrill of a new car does not fade when the first repair bill arrives.
