Hino South Africa is taking a flexible route to sustainable transport, with a strong focus on multiple power solutions for its trucks.

“Hino is committed to taking a multipath approach for its trucks, with the choice of a power unit, which will best suit the operators’ needs,” said Itumeleng Segage, General Manager of Hino South Africa, during a media briefing at Gazoo Racing headquarters near Pretoria.

The company continues to develop internal combustion diesel engines while also offering diesel-electric hybrids and battery electric vehicles in selected markets. Hydrogen is another area under investigation, with global trials showing promise for long-haul applications where zero emission green hydrogen could be used from depots with refuelling systems.

In South Africa, Hino is trialling 38 Hino 300 diesel-electric hybrid trucks with operators. “Fuel consumption with this type of power unit is showing savings of up to 20%. Normally, the initial purchase price of such alternative technology would be high, but because it is a trial, Hino South Africa is subsidising the acquisition cost,” explained Segage.

Hino, in partnership with Toyota’s mobility brand KINTO, will offer customers a low-risk leasing option. The Hino Dutro Z EV van was also showcased, with a 150km range and one ton capacity, highlighting the brand’s commitment to alternative transport.
