Google has introduced a new AI-driven feature that can call local auto repair shops and inquire about services on behalf of users, as reported by 9to5Google.
Part of Google’s Search Lab, this experimental feature is currently available in the U.S. on a waitlist basis and is limited to auto service centers and nail salons.
When users search for terms like “oil change near me,” they may see an “Ask for me” prompt. They can then specify the services they need, such as factory-scheduled maintenance, tire rotation, fuel filter replacement, or cabin and engine filter replacements.
Next, users enter their vehicle’s details, including make, model, year, and mileage, along with their preferred appointment timeframe—weekdays, weekends, or as soon as possible.
Google’s AI will then place a call using a natural-sounding virtual voice, gather information from local businesses, and provide a summary of prices and availability.
This feature is powered by Google’s Duplex technology, which has previously been used for making restaurant reservations and updating business hours on Google Maps.
It is uncertain if and when this feature will be available in South Africa.
