UD Trucks Southern Africa has expanded its aftermarket support offering with the introduction of a new Service Exchange programme designed to provide transport operators with additional options when replacing major vehicle components.
The programme enables customers to exchange eligible worn or damaged components for professionally remanufactured units rather than purchasing brand-new replacements. Initially, the initiative will cover engines, gearboxes and injectors, with plans to add more component categories in the future.
Reducing Downtime for Fleet Operators
For fleet operators, vehicle downtime can have a direct impact on productivity, delivery schedules and operating costs. The Service Exchange programme is intended to help customers return vehicles to service more quickly when major component replacements are required.
Under the programme, a UD Trucks dealer assesses the vehicle and determines whether a suitable replacement unit is available. If approved, the worn component, known as the core, is returned according to programme requirements and may be restored for future use.
This creates an additional option for customers alongside traditional repair and replacement routes, offering greater flexibility when managing maintenance and repair decisions.
Supporting Cost-Effective Maintenance
The Service Exchange programme is designed to provide an alternative between repairing an existing component and investing in a completely new replacement.
Depending on component availability and the nature of the repair, operators may benefit from reduced vehicle downtime while managing maintenance expenditure more effectively.
The initiative forms part of UD Trucks Southern Africa's broader aftermarket strategy, which focuses on supporting customers throughout the operational life of their vehicles.
All exchange units supplied through the programme are backed by a one-year warranty, subject to applicable terms and conditions.
Enhanced Dealer Support
In addition to supplying replacement components, the programme creates opportunities for dealers to work more closely with customers when evaluating repair options.
Dealerships can assist operators in selecting the most appropriate solution based on a vehicle's application, operating conditions and maintenance requirements, helping customers make informed decisions that support fleet performance and reliability.
According to the company, the programme allows dealers to play a broader advisory role while remaining actively involved throughout the vehicle lifecycle.
Supporting Circular Economy Principles
Beyond the operational and financial benefits, the Service Exchange programme contributes to a more sustainable approach to component management.
Returned cores that meet programme requirements can be restored and returned to service, extending the useful life of selected components and reducing the need for every replacement to involve newly manufactured parts.
This approach supports resource efficiency while helping maximise the value derived from existing components.
Future Expansion Planned
The programme will initially focus on engines, gearboxes and injectors. However, UD Trucks has indicated that additional components such as cylinder heads, starters, alternators, turbochargers and retarders are expected to be added at a later stage.
Customers interested in participating can contact their nearest UD Trucks dealer for information regarding component eligibility, replacement unit availability, warranty coverage and core-return requirements.
With the introduction of the Service Exchange programme, UD Trucks Southern Africa is broadening its aftermarket support services while helping customers balance maintenance costs, productivity and vehicle uptime.
